XHTML CSS Layout

Using a combination of XHTML and CSS to layout your website will ensure not only consistant cross browser performance but also make your site easier to be found by the search engines. The only other option to control the layout of web pages was to use tables, an extremely clumsy and long winded way of doing things that would result in pages that were anything but search engine friendly.

With many more devices being adpted to access the internet, such as mobile phones, pdas, and the iPhone, it became obvious that something had to be done to improve the both the cross compatability and readability of HTML. The answer came in the form of XHTML and CSS. Extensible HyperText Markup Language can almost be seen as a combination of XML and HTML.

The main advantage of using this approach is the ease at which the seach engines can read the content on the page, a vital aspect when it comes to search engine optimisation. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) have a validation page where you can check to see if the code behine your pages has any errors.
